Anderson Starter as Camp Opens States Pluto

Anderson #1 for now

Long time Akron Beacon Journal writer and author Terry Pluto is stating that the Browns are going to with Derek Anderson as the starting quarterback when camp opens in about a week and a half.  Anderson shined during the teams minicamps, while last seasons starter – Charlie Frye, was not very good, and rookie Brady Quinn for the most part looked lost.

The article states that it will be interesting to see the mindset to Frye, who has never lost a starting job and how he handles being number two.  No one after the Browns drafted Quinn ever expected the job to be Charlie’s for very long.  If nothing else, Charlie would start the season, and then Quinn would eventually get his shot to lead the team.  Frye has never been a great “practice player,” and now it we’ll see what he has once he lines up with the second team.

As far as Anderson goes, he did show some poise last season when he entered the Chiefs game and brought the Browns back to victory with a big foruth quarter and an even bigger run to set up the game winning field goal.  His stock though then dropped after he was not very good in games vs the Steelers, Ravens and a Christmas Eve home loss to the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Derek though has been sharp during the mini-camps, and if he can continue to show growth and play at a high level, there is no doubt he is going to be in the mix as far as getting the opening day start vs the Steelers is concerned.  Starting training camp as the number one does mean something, but it will only mean something if he can keep playing like he did during the camps and OTA’s.
