QB Battle Solved Little in Browns 16-12 Win

Edwards makes a grab

While Romeo Crennel held true to his word about a coin flip deciding who would start at QB.  That flip didn’t do much to settle the Browns situation at quarterback on Saturday night.  The team was able to pull out a 16-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Cleveland Browns Stadium, which was the good news.  The QB battle between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson was somewhat the bad news, and it’s sure to continue, and maybe if Brady Quinn ever saw the field (he didn’t take a snap on Saturday night), then maybe he may have a shot as well.  Chris Barclay was the hero for the Browns, as he took back a short kickoff the distance with 1:48 to go for the game-winner in a rather lackluster affair.

Frye got the start, going 12-for-15 for 122 yards.  He made a few decent throws, but his night will be recalled for a messed up swing pass that was a fumble that was returned 56 yards for a KC TD.  He also messed up clock management, as he scrambled and allowed the first half clock to run out as the Browns were in field goal range.  Anderson didn’t do much to help his cause, as he went just 7-for-16 for 76 yards.  He had a few bad underthrows, and looked a little lost.

The Browns fans clearly wanted to see their number one draft choice and soon to be number one QB – Quinn.  With Frye, Anderson and then Ken Dorsey not able to generate much, the crowd got restless, chanting “Brady” in the 4th quarter as both teams’ 3rd and 4th stringers showed why they will be back on the street and off NFL rosters shortly.  Quinn is expected to finally get his chance next week, as the Browns will host the Lions next Saturday, and Quinn will get sometime in that game.

So for now, the QB spot in Cleveland remains open.  Frye did show a little more on Saturday, but with three weeks left in the preseason, it’s still anyones guess as to who will take the first snap for Cleveland September 9th vs the Steelers.  Maybe coach Crennel can flip a coin on that one too.  It might not make that much of a difference until Quinn is ready to go for good.
