Starting QB Spot Still Up for Grabs, Baxter Looks Good

The battle to be the starting quarterback will continue this week. Head coach Romeo Crennel said on Monday that Charlie Frye played a little better than Derek Anderson against Kansas City, but there is still a competition going on. Crennel added that he has not decided who will start this coming Saturday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but is leaning towards letting Anderson play first. Crennel would not say how much action rookie Brady Quinn will see this coming weekend as the former Notre Dame quarterback did not play against the Chiefs.
On a good note from Monday, the comeback of cornerback Gary Baxter continued on Monday as he saw live action at training camp. Baxter says that everything is on schedule as there have been no setbacks. Baxter is trying to comeback after tearing tendons in both knees last season. Baxter is still hopeful that he might be ready to play when the Browns open the regular season September 9th against the Steelers.
The team also re-signed offensive lineman Brent Pousson on Monday. Poussen participated in rookie mini-camp and organized team activities before being released by the Browns in June. The Browns are looking to add some depth to the offensive line since right tackle Ryan Tucker will start the regular season serving a four-game suspended for testing positive for steroids. Also, left guard Eric Steinbach is dealing with a sprained right knee.
