Frye Gets the Starting Nod for Preseason Game Three

FryeHead coach Romeo Crennel has named his starting quarterback for the teams third preseason game on Saturday night in Denver, and instead of going with the hot-hand in rookie Brady Quinn, instead the coach went with Charlie Frye.  “I think not knowing began to wear on them a bit,” Crennel said. “I think they feel better knowing who the starter is and not having that hanging over their heads.”  Quinn, who led the Browns with two TD’s in the 4th quarter of their 23-20 loss to the Lions at Browns Stadium, will “have chances” said Crennel, and will most likely get more playing time earlier on Saturday.

Frye and fellow QB Derek Anderson shared reps in the Browns loss on Saturday night, and neither was all that effective, as the Browns fell behind 23-0 before Quinn and co. led the team back with 20 late points to make it interesting.  Nevertheless, Crennel seems bent on making the rookie pay his dues, and giving Frye and Anderson every shot to become the teams starter opening day vs the Steelers at home.  “In choosing Frye, a lot of it has to do with game experience,” Crennel said. “I feel like we’ve been equal with the guys in the reps and series that they get.”

Crennel did not commit to Frye being the opening day starter, only to say that “It means Charlie is the starter this week,” Crennel said.  There has been speculation that once the Browns do decide on a starter between Frye and Anderson, the odd man out will get traded or released, leaving the door open for Quinn to be the number two QB, and Ken Dorsey as the emergency QB to help groom Quinn.  Crennel did finally give some credit to Quinn for showing poise and leading the team vs the Lions.  “The young kid, we’re going to keep working with him, keep bringing him along,” Crennel said. “I thought he showed enough poise and execution in the game to bring him along. He still has a lot of work to do so we’re not going to rush him into a game because he looked good at the end of a game.
