Positions Still Open as Browns Enter Last Preseason Game

Bald Brady

The Browns still have plenty of questions as they head into tonights preseason finale vs the Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. For starters, the team has yet to name a starting QB – even though it appears more than evident at this point that Charlie Frye is going to get the starting nod in 10 days vs the Steelers at home. Frye has started the last few preseason games, and last week put together an impressive drive vs the Broncos to start the game that likely cemented his role as the starter.

How long Frye will be the starter is another story. If and when he is named to that spot, the team will have to make a rather tough decision on what to do with Derek Anderson. DA is on the hot seat as the team would like to move Brady Quinn to the two spot at the QB position, then have vet Ken Dorsey as the emergency QB. The team likes Dorsey enough that when cut down day comes, don’t be shocked to see either Anderson released or traded to possibly the Falcons, who are in desperate need of a quarterback even if they don’t say they are.

The third wide out spot remains up for grabs as well. Travis Wilson has been given every shot to cash in on that position, but drops in the last two games and plenty more in practice has opened the door for others. Tim Carter, who came over from the Giants in a trade could fill the void if Wilson keeps dropping balls, but Carter has been hurt with thumb and hamstring injuries. Another option is to see who gets let go over the weekend and for the Browns to move to grab someone off the market.

Also watch for who gets the role as third running back on the team. Jerome Harrison, “Mr.Preseason” and Chris Barclay have gone back and forth, with each showing toughness and ability to fill that role. Harrison seems to be the better running back, but Barclay has won the special teams battle, mostly with a great kickoff return that won the first preseason game vs the Chiefs. If he could return punts, he’d be even more valuable to the team and would make Harrison expendable.
