Browns Want To Re-Up Lewis for ‘08

Depending on what your definition of the word intend is may be of importance to Cleveland Browns fans everywhere; a “source” is indicating that the Browns “intend” (see there’s that word again) to bring back running back Jamal Lewis for the 2008 season. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Lewis told them that “[Browns General Manager] Phil Savage and this organization, they’ll talk to my agent, and if there’s anything, they’ll talk to me. So that’s it.”
Lewis’ agent, Mitch Frankel, said on Friday that contract extension talks have not begun yet; however, the initial source has said that the team will address the issue after the season. Lewis’ numbers point towards him re-signing with Cleveland; prior to Sunday’s game against San Francisco, Lewis has rushed for 1,176 yards and 9 touchdowns. He is currently on a 1-year contract worth $5 million, includsing incentives; what is just as important in these negotiations is that Lewis will become an unrestricted free agent March 2008. So there really isn’t much of a timeframe to work with here.
