Browns Fire Defensive Coordinator Grantham

Grantham

The Browns offense in 2007 was better than anyone could have expected.  As for their defense, it was bad enough to cost defensive coordinator Todd Grantham his job on Friday.  It was a stunning move for the Browns, as even as bad as the defense was it came as a surprise to fire a coordinator who has just signed a new two-year deal a few months ago.  The defense of the Browns got better as the season went along, making big stops in some big wins over the Seahawks and Jets, but overall ranked 30th overall at seasons end.

The team released a statment telling the fans that Grantham would “not be retained for the 08 season.”  Head coach Romeo Crennel, who knows a thing or two about defense, said in a statement “Todd has worked extremely hard during his three seasons with the Browns, following our discussions after the season, it was decided that it was in the best interests of the organization to move in a different direction.”  What that direction will be is anyones guess.  Crennel said that a decision would be coming soon on who would take over the job.

The Browns defense gave up 382 points and allowed 359.6 yards per game.  They ranked 15th in pass defense last season, this year they were 24th, allowing 230.1 yards per game.  They also allow way too many yards on the ground, this year giving up 129.5 yards per game, 27th in the league.  This was Grantham’s third season with the Browns.  He had also been with the Texans and the Colts as a coach in years past.
