Looking at the Browns Needs this Offseason

Phil Savage

As I stated in a previous letter, the Browns need to get rid of Todd Grantham. They did. Next move is to trade Anderson for 2 first round draft picks. If the Browns are going to keep Anderson they could go another route. Free agency.

We need to re sign Lewis first. Get Harrison into the game more, then the running back position will be solidified. Tight end is set with Winslow. Wide receiver is set also but they need to get Joe J back in the mix. He says he wants to play at least one more year. As for the O line, the left side is set for years to come with Thomas and Steinbach, both having pro bowl type seasons. Fraley had a good year at center. Tucker and Shaffer had decent years on the right side. Tucker will be 33 in June and Shaffer will only be 28 this year but had too many holding calls.

The D line needs some help, although we might be better without Grantham. Roye is over the hill and will be 35 in less than a week. Injuries plagued him this year too. Shaun Smith will be 27 this year and is starting to improve at his position. Robaire Smith will be 31 this year. At linebacker, both Wimbley and Jackson are set. McGinest will be 37 this year and didn’t do much in 07. Peek is ready to move in. Davis is only 30 this year but he seemed to slow down a little. Williams and McMillan are ready to step in if Davis doesn’t pick it up this year.

We could use a little help at linebacker also. Defensive backfield has some talent. I just think they need to learn to play together better. Bodden got burned a lot at the beginning of the year put got it together toward the end. MdDonald looks like he’s going to be tough. Jones and Wright are solid. Holly and Pool should be decent at back ups. Special teams was ranked 2nd best behind Chicago. We’re set there too. Personally, I think we should have finished “no worse” than 13 – 3. Anderson’s timing, missed tackles, stupid penalties, and bad coaching didn’t help matters. Possible free agent signings to follow ….

Max Starks is a possibility for the right side of the O line. He’s only 25, 6’7″ and weighs 337. On the D line you have Jared Allen of the Chiefs who’s only 25, and Justin Smith, who won’t break the bank to sign, and Terrell Suggs of the Ravens, who just turned 25 and can play both linebacker and D line. Linebackers available are Lance Briggs of the Bears and Karlos Dansby of the Cardinals who is young and talented. Pick up a couple of these free agents and we’ll be good and ready for 2008. Or trade Anderson and pick up 2 young, talented D linemen or a D lineman and a linebacker in the draft. Go Browns!!!
