Source: Anderson and Browns Ready to Agree on a Three-Year Deal

Anderson
While the talk of the offseason in Cleveland has been the future of QB Derek Anderson, it looks as if the QB will be signed and sealed to the Browns before he becomes a restricted free agent on February 29th.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported late on Tuesday that GM Phil Savage is now confident that the team will be able to get Anderson to sign on the dotted line of a new three-year deal before free agency hits.

“Talks have been a little more frequent in recent days,” Savage said in an e-mail response to the paper. “It seems that the three-year deal is becoming more the focus. We’ve had pretty good dialouge and will continue over the [NFL scouting] combine.”  The GM said that the two sides seem to feel that three years is a good length for the two sides.  It will give Anderson time to continue to develop, and at the same time it will keep Brady Quinn waiting in the wings.

The Browns will have till the 28th to get a deal done, or they will have to tender the QB a one-year deal as a restricted free agent, meaning that if any team wants him, they will have to give up a first and third round pick.  Savage said to the paper it shouldn’t reach that point.  “It has gone back and forth several times,” said Savage. “I think we feel good about it.”  By signing Anderson, it looks as if it means Quinn will spend at least 1-2 more years as the teams backup.  The team gave up this years first round draft pick to Dallas for the rights to pick Quinn.  Now it looks as if he’ll continue to wear a baseball cap and watch Anderson continue to try to get the Browns into the playoffs.
