Giant Mistakes: Preseason Game Two Browns Recap

2nd Pre-Season Game
Cleveland Browns 34
New York Giants 37

The score is very misleading to what actually happened as the defending Super Bowl Champion, New York Giants not only defeated the Browns, but they made it look easy. For the Browns’ sake, thank God it was a pre-season game because this game was riddled with mistakes. In this game we witnessed 98 penalty yards racked up against the Browns, a fumble on the 5 yard line that was returned for a 95 yard touchdown, a free kick returned for an 82 yard touchdown by the Giants and a punt by the Browns that was kicked into their own player, which resulted in a safety. Two minutes into the 2nd quarter the Browns were down 33-3. The Browns second and third stringers mounted a come back to make the score respectable.

The Good:
• This was only an exhibition game.
• Kicker Phil Dawson kicked a 56-yard field goal!
• Wide receiver Syndric Steptoe continues to be a spark. He rushed for a 7-yard touchdown and caught a 44-yard touch down strike from Brady Quinn. He also racked up 130 return yards.
•20Corner Back Eric Wright intercepted a pass and returned it for a 15-yard touchdown. He also had a sack, which led to a 10-yard loss for the Giants.

The Very Bad:
• The defending champs dismantled the 1st team offensive line. With continued pressure which stymied our 1st team offense.
• 98 yards in penalties is unacceptable. Giving up
• Pass coverage was considered a weakness going into this season and it continued to show last night. Our corners could not cover Domenik Hixon who had 2 receiving touchdowns and was the primary receiver when Corner Eric Wright was flagged for a 52-yard pass interference play.
• QB Derek Anderson left the game with an apparent concussion and possibly a bruised hand.
• Special Teams had difficulty covering kicks all night long as they gave up a kick return for a touchdown and they also had a blocked punt.

After the game Coach Crennel was quoted and he summed it up best, “As you saw, we didn’t play very good.” “They out coached us.” “They outplayed us.” “We were in it for a second,” he said. “Then we got too many penalties and penalties changed the field position.” “The first quarter basically was the game.” “It was unbelievable!”

The Browns better really get their act together. Hopefully this is a much needed wake-up call and a learning experience for both the players and the COACHING STAFF!
