Lions Win the Classic Over Browns 26-6

Cleveland Browns 6
Detroit Lions 26

The Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns in a game that has been dubbed the Great Lakes Classic. This game was the 3rd preseason game for both teams and it showed. The game was filled with many mistakes and back-up players.

The Browns entered this game with many of their starters on the bench do to injuries. Three key members that were missing were Derek Anderson, Jamal Lewis and Braylon Edwards. This was the first N.F.L. start for the kid from Notre Dame, (Brady Quinn) and it showed.

The Lions saw this as an opportunity to apply a lot of pressure with a constant stream of blitzes and it worked. Quinn spent the game running for his life and rushing his passes. Quinn finished the game 14-of-24 for 106 yards. The Browns defense was even more lack luster. The defense continues to show wholes in its secondary as the Lions had very little trouble throwing the ball against the Browns.

The Lions have to be happy with their effort last night. John Kitna didn’t throw a touchdown, but in the little time that he was in the game, he was very effective and efficient. He finished the game with 98 yards passing in 2 possessions and he showed us a glimpse of how explosive this offense can be.

The Lions wide receiver tandem of Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson continue to turn heads of fans and of the defensive backs that attempt to cover them. In two drives with Kitna at the helm the Lions moved the ball through the air with little resistance. Rookie running back Kevin Smith of the Lions who began the game a little stagnate was very impressive and showed a lot of talent and potential in his 35 yard scamper to the end zone.

The next game for each team:

Chicago @ Cleveland Thurs. 8/28 7:30 p.m.
Detroit @ Buffalo Thurs. 8/28 6:30 p.m.
