Browns Great HOF Guard Hickerson Dies at 73

One of the greatest pulling guards in NFL history has passed.  Browns Hall of Famer Gene Hickerson died on Monday at the age of 73.  He was the teams best ever right guard, and helped out backs Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Bobby Mitchell.  Brown had called Hickerson “the greatest downfield blocker in the history of pro football.”

All three, Brown, Kelly and Mitchell pushed Hickerson’s wheelchair onto the stage in Canton last year when he was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Hickerson was voted to six straight Pro Bowls and was chosen for the league’s All-Decade team of the 1960s.

“Everyone associated with the Cleveland Browns is saddened by the loss of Gene Hickerson,” Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. “His tenacity as a blocker and toughness as a player epitomized what it means to be a Cleveland Brown.”
