Browns Come to Terms with Free Agent TE Robert Royal

The Browns have inked their first free agent, as the team has come to terms with Bills free agent tight end Robert Royal. “Everything should be official by (Thursday),” Royal told the Plain Dealer. “I’m definitely excited to be a member of the Cleveland Browns and start a new chapter in my life.”

The 30-year-old Royal has been in the league for eight seasons, and was a three-year veteran of the Bills. Last year he caught 33 passes for 351 yards with one TD. He is known more for his blocking at 6-4, 255, but overall, did catch 81 passes with seven scores with the Bills.

He was cut back on February 26th in a salary-cap move by the Bills, and did speak to the Jets along with the Browns before making a decision. He’s likely the number one TE right now with Steve Heiden coming off surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and Martin Rucker still learning the ropes as a second-year player.

I like this signing because it is need-specific. It will help our running game and our short passing game. Sometimes the best measure of a quality move is to look at the reaction of smart commentators or media in the former vicinity where the guy played. I read two knowledgeable pieces in buffalo lamenting on losing royal

Is this our shining example of free agency moves? Time to sell season tickets, if only there was anyone who would buy them.
