Is Crabtree an Option for the Browns at Five?
Posted by Matt Loede on March 29th, 2009 in News

According to Browns beat writer Tony Grossi, Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree could be a “viable option” for Cleveland with the No. 5 overall pick. The Browns are rumored to want to trade WR Braylon Edwards. But even if they don’t, there is a great need for wide receiver after Edwards, especially if WR Donte’ Stallworth misses time.

That would be a mistake, in my opinion. Yes, we are short at the receiver position, but using an overall #5 pick on a WR given our needs on defense would be crazy. We can pick up depth at the receiver position either through free agency or later in the Draft. Use the #5 pick (if we keep it) on an LB or DE. Besides, most who have been around the college Draft long enough will tell you that WRs are generally not worthy of top 10 selection for a variety of reasons including the fact that the talent tends to bunch in the middle for receivers – in other words, there is a greater percentage of good receivers available every year than virtually any other position. Crabtree is very good, but not worth #5.
