Browns Invite Texas Tech QB Harrell to Minicamp

The wonder of how much stock Eric Mangini really has in Derek Anderson and/or Brady Quinn has reared its head again, as today the team agreed to bring in undrafted free agent QB Graham Harrell for the club’s minicamp this weekend.

The Texas Tech quarterback went undrafted, and while he does not have a deal with the Browns in place long-term, he’ll get his shot to throw with the big boys over the weekend.

“Yes, he will participate in the minicamp,” agent Chad Speck said in an e-mail. Harrell threw an NCAA-record 134 touchdown passes. More impressive was his completion percentage—above 70 in two 5,000-yard seasons.

He also was one of 15 finalists for the Draddy Trophy, which goes to the nation’s top scholar-athlete and was won by the Browns first-round pick, center Alex Mack. Right now the roster has on it Quinn, Anderson and Brett Ratliff in the QB spot.

I was a little surprised that Harrell did not get drafted. He was, however, overshadowed by Crabtree and by a few other QBs in the Draft. Ratliff was nothing more than a “free-b” for the Browns in the trade with the Jets for the 5th overall pick, so I suspect that the Team wants to see how Harrell stacks up against Ratliff.
