The Browns Had Offers for Quinn?

Browns Steelers Football
Yes, the rumors of Brady Quinn being on the trading block for the Browns have reared their ugly head again, this time coming from the Plain Dealer and beat writer Tony Grossi. The report points out that a source told Grossi that the Browns did have two offers on the table for Quinn, but the team passed on both and there will be an open competition for the QB spot this summer.

Here’s the report from the PD on Quinn maybe getting shipped elsewhere:

I offer up this tidbit for the enjoyment of those who find the ongoing debate on the Browns quarterback situation to be insatiable.

I recently spoke with someone I will identify as a league source. This person does not work for an NFL team but works with NFL teams and has a prominent name.

I asked, “Whom do you think will wind up starting at quarterback for the Browns?”

Without hesitation, the answer was, “Brady Quinn.”

The person went on to say that the Browns had two “very subtantial” trade offers for Quinn — each involved a No. 1 draft pick — and declined to trade him.

The source would not speculate on whether a trade of Quinn might have been blocked by owner Randy Lerner. The source believes that there will be a true “open competition” between Quinn and Derek Anderson and that Quinn will prevail.

The source does not believe that newly acquired ex-Jet Brett Ratliff will be thrown into the open competition. The source’s take on Ratliff: “Eric Mangini likes having him around because he feels comfortable with him and he knows the offense.”

The rumor of Quinn being on the block has been out there for sometime, and many still feel to this day that the team will not have two quality starting QB’s – Derek Anderson and Quinn on the roster come the start of the season. Could Quinn still be moved? Sure, but at the same time, it seems more likely that both QB’s will be around and ready to fight it out to be the opening day starter.

I doubt that Brady will be moved. I think this may be one of the few times that Lerner may have had some input into the decision to decline the trade offers.

I would like to see him get a shot for at least a season to see how he goes through his ups and downs and his learning curve; then we’ll know which one to trade and if the remaining is a backup/temp fix or what. I just don’t see learner doing anything more than suggesting at this point. they better start thinking in terms of getting ready for the season and forget all theother bs for now.
