Kicker Dawson to NOT be Back in the 2009 Season?
Posted by Matt Loede on July 3rd, 2009 in Rumors

There’s been no real news on the contract front to report for kicker Phil Dawson, who has been with the team since they came back in 1999. The newest reporter at ESPN, former NFL Network reporter Adam Schefter, says in his Twitter that Dawson will NOT be with the Browns in 2009:
“Prediction based on what I’m hearing: Phil Dawson will not kick for Cleveland this season. He wants a new contract and there’s a standoff.”
Sure, it could be considered a “standoff,” but are we really at a point where Dawson is not going to be around in the 09 season? He’s been a solid kicker over the years for the Browns, and he and the team need to get this worked out so he can be on the field for the 09 season.

Although the Browns picked up a new place kicker in the off-season, relying upon an arena guy in Cleveland is pretty risky. Phil has been better than average among kickers in the league, especially last year down the stretch beginning with that long zinger to win the game in Buffalo. But without knowing what Dawson’s demands are, I’m certainly not prepared to call upon the Team to meet those at any price.
