QB Spot More Up in the Air Than Ever

Derek Anderson looked good against the Lions on Saturday night, but the Browns still haven’t decided on starting quarterback. Anderson went 8-for-13 with 130 yards and an interception, and led Cleveland on their first touchdown drive in seven games. “I thought things went well,” Anderson told the Associated Press. “I played all right. I made some good throws and a couple I wish I could have back. It was an opportunity and I was happy to go out there and play well while I was in.” Quinn was just 3-for-5 with 29 yards in limited duty. “I’m really not going to assess it that way now,” Browns coach Eric Mangini said of the team’s quarterback battle. “We’ll keep rolling along and move into next week and see where it goes.”

We all knew that this was going to happen. It’s like we know we are going to have a hangover tomorrow morning yet we keep drinking. We know if DA is the QB he will look really good sometimes but he will not post a winning record. WE KNOW THAT. We know he can have great games. So why should this change anything?

We know that DA is capable of big games. There is nothing to see; his body of work speaks for itself. Either you like what you hear or not.

A 62% pass completion rate with an IT against the Lions is not anything to blow your socks off. Don’t get me wrong – the Browns showed some improvement and that’s good, however, I doubt that the game changes anything in terms of who Mangini intends to start at QB on opening day against the Vikes.

If anything it reaffirms my thought that under the slightest pressure he throws a pick after locking in on a reciever and looking him down the field. It would have ignited more interceptions had bq not been brought in and we probably would have seen a loss.

There is no way you start DA on this team. BQ was the “face of the franchise”. You gotta give him the rock and let him play for a season, anyway. This team is going nowhere, anyway, so do it now. If BQ collapses, then you have DA waiting or you draft a QB. If it pans out, then we are not drafting a QB next Spring but other positions of need (take your pick). LBs, DBs, DL, OL, RB, TE, WR — all could be upgraded. It is hardly a risky statement to say that Cleveland will be drafting in the first 12 picks, and probably earlier. Lots of good players in that area next year — including 3 QBs of note.
