Tale of Two Halves: 13-10 Halftime Leads Turns Into Eventual 34-20 Setback

Vikings Browns Football
What happened?

At halftime the Browns looked like a team playing inspired. They were making plays, and while the numbers were not spectacular, the team was ahead 13-10 thanks to a pair of Phil Dawson field goals and a 67-yard punt return by Josh Cribbs.

Then the bottom dropped out.

The Vikings dominated the second half, rushing the ball for big chunks vs the Browns run D, and then creating turnovers and putting some big hits on QB Brady Quinn and the rest of the Browns offense. The team did finally score an offensive TD, but down 34-13 and scoring a TD with :28 seconds left doesn’t cut it.

Quinn wasn’t very good in my opinion. He never seemed to get into a flow with Braylon Edwards, and also seemed more than happy to go to his check downs most of the afternoon. If it were not for the teams 80-yard meaningless TD drive at the end, Quinn would have ended with about 120 yards and a pick.

The running game also faltered in the second half, as Jamal Lewis never really got much of a chance to run like he did in the first half. He ended with 57 yards on 11 carries after putting up 32 first half yards. es, Browns fans are use to losing the opener (they have 10 of the last 11 years), but Sunday was frustrating as they did look like a team that compete in the first half, only to fall apart in the final 30 minutes.
