Browns Promote DL Brian Schaefering to 53-Man Roster

The Browns today elevated defensive lineman Brian Schaefering to the active 53-man roster, the team announced. In addition, the club signed running back Jed Collins and defensive back Michael Grant to the practice squad.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland on May 1, 2008, Schaefering spent one week on the Browns’ practice squad last year before being signed to the New York Jets’ active roster on December 30. He has spent the first 12 weeks of this season on the Browns’ practice squad.

The 6-4, 295-pound Schaefering played one season for Lindenwood University (2007) in St. Charles, Mo., after transferring from Illinois (2001-04). As a senior, he led the team with 7.5 sacks and also recorded 37 tackles with one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. He is a native of St. Louis, Mo., where he attended Hazelwood East High School.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Philadelphia on April 28, 2008, Collins spent parts of the 2008 season on Philadelphia and Cleveland’s practice squad, in addition to two weeks on the Browns’ 53-man roster. He attended training camp this season with the Kansas City Chiefs, and spent three weeks on the Chiefs’ practice squad before being released on November 24. A four-year letterman at Washington State (2004-07), Collins appeared in 46 games with 16 starts at linebacker, fullback and tight end, registering 80 receptions for 899 yards with six touchdowns. As a senior, he started all 12 games and recorded a career-high 52 receptions for 512 yards with three touchdowns. The 6-1, 249-pound Collins is a native of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., who attended Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Jacksonville on May 16, 2008, Grant spent time during the 2008 season on the practice squads of Kansas City and Washington. He was released by the Redskins on August 30, 2009. A four-year letterman at Arkansas (2004-07), Grant saw action in 44 contests, collecting 154 tackles, 32 passes defensed, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack. As a senior, he recorded a career-high 75 tackles, 20 passes defensed, three interceptions and one forced fumble. The 5-11, 182-pound Grant is a native of Stone Mountain, Ga., where he attended Stephenson High School.

    Anyone else notice the number of injuries the Browns have been coming up with lately? Almost seems like they are giving up on the entire year and don’t want to play for Mangina anymore. I’m sure that they will have an abundance of injuries to start the season next year also.
