Looking at the numerous areas that the Browns can improve upon going into the 2010 NFL season, it really makes little sense to focus on the quarterback position. The upcoming draft should be used to upgrade three other areas that have nothing to do with the quarterback.

Brady Quinn has had two seasons end abruptly due to injury. But, he has proved in his limited starts that he can make quick decisions, that when allowed, he can throw the ball deep and in terms of leadership qualities he has them in excess. Time would be better spent using the off season to get him up to speed with the offense and on the same page with his receivers. It seems that a lot of the issues the Browns had on offense occurred because of youth and inexperience, not lack of ability.

It is also quite apparent that until some of the positions on the offensive line are addressed, it doesn’t matter who is behind center, there is no chance anyone can succeed in Cleveland at quarterback. So, this year, it would make much more sense to spend one of the draft picks we have on the offensive line.

Also, there is no doubt that the team’s focus should be on defense. The line, the linebackers, and the secondary all need upgrades. Even though we saw growth in the last four games of the season, the talent level is still not there to compete at the highest levels. That is what the bulk of picks should be used to address. Defense.

Giving Brady Quinn another year to prove himself is the right idea. He could still turn out to be a great NFL quarterback. And if he falls on his face in 2010, more than likely we’ll have another high draft pick and a myriad of quarterback prospects that we can choose from. One that could come into a situation without the added pressure of being a team savior because he has a “team” around him to bear some of that burden.

Brady Quinn can still succeed. It just requires a little faith and a commitment to fill in other holes apparent on this team.
