Haden the safe pick ……..

Heckert and Mangini on Haden

From Cleveland.com

“Joe was a guy we spent a lot of time with and evaluating,” GM Tom Heckert said. “He’s a bigger corner that can really play the run, good cover ability, smart kid and he’s tough.”

Heckert said he considered Haden’s slow times at the combine to be “a positive.”

“He was hurt (back injury) and he told everyone he’d run, and then he ran,” Heckert said. “He was fast at his pro day.”

Coach Eric Mangini praised Haden for possessing the core characteristics that earned him a “green sticker) on the Browns’ draft board.

“I’ve said it a lot,” Mangini said. “Smart, toughm hardworking, competitive, somebody who’s selfless, somebody who the game is important to.

“He did a great job the day he visited. You could feel the intensity, feel the passion, how much he cared about playing football and continue to improve. It was real. I don’t think there was anybody that met him that didn’t feel that way.”

According to ESPN reporter Michael Smith, the Browns debated between Haden and Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson.

Heckert confirmed Wilson was in the discussion, but that the Browns made up their mind on Haden before they were on the clock. He said the Browns talked to no teams about trading up, or trading down, once the draft began at 7:32 p.m. .
