Browns made a final effort for the top overall pick from Rams

While the Rams now officially have Sam Bradford, it came down the last minute that the Browns wanted the franchise QB. AP reports that Cleveland made one last-ditch effort to pry the first overall pick in the draft away from St. Louis with a trade.

Browns president Mike Holmgren says he made a phone call to the Rams 20 minutes before the draft began on Thursday and offered a package to the Rams, who selected the Oklahoma quarterback first overall. Holmgren says he made the offer to Rams general manager Billy Devaney “at the limits of what I was willing to do.” Holmgren says Devaney “finally said we’re going to take him (Bradford).

Holmgren would not specify what he offered the Rams, but one would have to guess that the deal included quite a few picks along with maybe a current player or two.

Good thing there were competent minds in charge.

Like I say, college isn’t my topic any more, but my gut tells me this is a good thing. I still wish there was a trading partner to go down a few and pick up a pic or two.
