Mangini on Carlton Mitchell
“Didn’t participate much in the Rookie camp and looks like a rookie right now. He is getting more opportunities now, but it is unfortunate he didn’t get much of a chance in rookie camp. He has done a good job with the information he has been given. There are some good things, but then there are some times he looks like he is thinking too much. I hope he can contribute this season, but its to early to tell.”
Coach Mangini on the Restricted Free Agents
“Talked to all the restricted free agents, whether it be via text, phone conversations, or throughout the building. Right now, them not being here just means more reps for the guys who are here. More opportunities for the players that are here to learn, but in their absence, it does give some guys an opportunity to show their talent. That is positive because there are a lot of guys at each position in camp and they can gain some extra reps with the restricted players not here.”
Mangini on Matt Roth
“I enjoyed coaching Matt. He is tough as nails and able to set a great edge. We got him on a Wednesday or Thursday and he got a sack on that Sunday. So I love Matt Roth.”
Mangini on Scott Fujita
“Is fitting in well and been a part of the off season program since he has signed, so he is getting to know the players. He has done a good job in OTA’s and also a smart guy picking up new things. “When Scott Fujita was asked about his role he said “It remains to be seen we have a lot of linebackers that can play a lot of different positions and that’s one of our strengths.”
Bringing in a Veteran Receiver
“Its something we continue to look at and we continue to look at all the different spots. Alex Smith recently at tight end, and that was something we talked about. So its a work in progress and if we can add depth and improve the competition at any spot we will. We are over the amount of players we are allowed to have at training camp so we will have to make some cuts as is.”
Utilizing the Running Backs
Its only May and coach has no idea how the offseason is going to pan out. Harrison and Vickers aren’t in camp and Hardesty has only been here for a couple weeks. In the Red Zone drills Hollis and Hardesty worked with what looked like to be the ones starting with Delhomme under center.
Improving our Pass Rush and Run Stopping ability
The Browns brought in Linebackers and they almost all can play either inside or outside linebacker. Rubin and Bernard have another year under the belt and the whole system has had another year to develop. The Browns defense will be much better then last year. It started to show signs of being a good defense in the month of December last year and I look for it to continue to get better this season.
Coach can’t talk about guys who are under contract with other teams and about possible trades. Rubin, Bernard, and Adams are all going to get an oppurtunity to start for the defense with many positions up for grabs on that side of the ball. Rubin will probably start the season opener with a suspension of Rogers likely to be coming soon. Mangini also has no idea about the labor agreement and whats going on right now. He is here to coach the football team and win games.
