Browns Lose To The Rams 19-17

The Star Tribune with a quick breakdown of the Browns late loss to the Rams at Browns Stadium on Saturday night.

Making his home debut in Cleveland’s unpredictable lakefront weather, QB Jake Delhomme was accurate and efficient playing in a steady first-half downpour, throwing one touchdown pass in the Browns’ 19-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night.

Delhomme finished 12 of 16 for 127 yards before he was replaced in the second half by Seneca Wallace, who connected for a 15-yard TD with Joshua Cribbs to give Cleveland a 17-13 lead in the third. Josh Brown’s fourth field goal, a 28-yarder with 3:33 left, won it for St. Louis (1-1). Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford had his second straight shaky outing.

The defense got ripped when Feeley was there — hitting the TEs with alarming proficiency. Steven Jackson ran with generally good results, as well. From an offense that was more abysmal than Cleveland’s last year — and without the arguable options that Cleveland has this year as opposed to last, these were not positives for this defense. They will be facing far better comp in their own division, let alone the NFC South and AFC East — all opponents this year. Offensively, Peyton Hillis has made this team and should get reps. With Vickers blocking and Hillis following, these guys are a load. If this is what Hardesty brings, then we have reason to be optimistic about the RB corps — but he better get back on the field very soon; it will not be possible to keep Hillis on the sidelines. Watson is the real deal — and it looks like he is going to be a frequent target for Delhomme, who also looked effective — again. It has been awhile since we have seen 100+ QB ratings in Cleveland — preseason or not. I like Seneca, too. If these guys continue, then the QB play alone should account for 3-4 more wins. It was wet, but 5 turnovers is not going to get the job done. Overall, I do not get the feeling of despair when falling behind or when things go wrong like I used to. These guys are playing and will play — and they are looking like they know what it is they are supposed to be accomplishing. It is beginning to feel like an NFL franchise again.
