McCoy practicing but not named Starter yet…

It’s Week 14 for the Browns and we’re still asking who’s the quarterback. Isn’t that the perfect metaphor for another Browns’ playoff-less season?

Before practice, coach Eric Mangini predicted that Colt McCoy would take “a decent amount” of reps with the first-team offense. But hold your horses about saddling up the rookie just yet for his anticipated return for the Cincinnati game on Sunday.

“In terms of movements and all the things asked of a quarterback, he doesn’t have limitations,” Mangini said. “But, again, it’s a matter of doing it and seeing how it looks and how it feels.

“I’ll be more definitive tomorrow.”

McCoy is in the fourth week of recovery from a high left ankle sprain. Jake Delhomme tried to come back in the fourth week of his original high right ankle sprain, but was still hobbled and worsened the injury. He then returned in the sixth week following his second ankle injury.

Seneca Wallace was in the fourth week of his high right ankle sprain when he suited up as the backup quarterback, but did not play. Three weeks later, Wallace said his leg still was not 100 percent. He wore a tight wrap around his ankle at practice on Wednesday.

“Each one of those [injuries] are different, in terms of severity, leg, place on the ankle,” Mangini said. “So the time each guy needs to come back is different. I’ve had guys come back and play in the same week. I’ve had them back in two weeks, three weeks, four weeks.”

So that clears that up.

McCoy will speak with reporters on Thursday, at which time he is expected to be named the starter in Cincinnati. Barring a setback, of course.

Since all three quarterbacks are healthier than they’ve been at the same time since the season opener, Mangini will have to sort out not only who’s the starter but who’s the backup. More to the point, who’s the No. 3 and virtually out of the game plan?
