I have to admit .. this has got to be a very awkward conversation for Mangini. Eric Mangini is very much “robotic” in his question and answer style, but he is definitely smart enough to end up as a head coach again someday down the line (maybe not a great one, but possibly solid if he had a good staff). I really think he could be best served for 3 or 5 more years just serving as a coordinator and learning everything he can.

I’m sure it is awkward but he’s been very classy about it. Look up the video of Mangini in the segment on Sportscenter DIRECTLY after they announced the Shurmur hiring. Here Shurmur has just been given Eric’s old job and the first thing Mangini does is pitch his house in Cleveland to him. Eric could have been a real jerk, ripping the organization, ripping Shurmur and so on and folks would have understood. Perhaps even expected it. And instead he tries to ease Pat’s transition into the job.

Between the progress we were showing and his class in dealing with this awkward topic, I sure hope Mangini gets another shot somehwere. (Preferably in the NFC). I think the next job that shows just how solid a coach he truly is. Shurmur’s our guy now and I intend to support him. But if we’d kept Mangini, you wouldn’t have heard me complaining.
