Would the Browns Take Newton or Gabbert If They are There at Six

The Plain Dealer today says that if Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert is there at #6, the Browns will take them. Then again, could one of be used as trade bait to another team further down in the draft?

The Browns are telling the truth when it comes to their commitment to Colt McCoy. The last thing they want at this stage is another young quarterback in the mix — and a replay of the Brady Quinn/Derek Anderson situation where there are two young quarterbacks and neither develops. The Browns would love one of the quarterbacks — Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert — to drop to them at No. 6. Not that they want a QB, but they’d want to trade. A team desperate for a QB could make a tremendous offer.

  1. Denolakes says:

This would be trade bait. Prognosticating a QB — or any player — before they are drafted is a hugely risky endeavor. Tom Brady and Joe Montana are the most immediate examples of quality coming later in the draft. Tim Couch, Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn are all examples of first round busts. Then there is Elway.

Either of these guys makes it to No. 6, then there will be a trade.
