Browns OL Billy Yates Thinking Retirement

According to The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot and other media outlets, eight year veteran Billy Yates is contemplating retirement.

Yates, a reserve offensive lineman for the Browns, showed up to camp early this morning, but left the facility without practicing. It’s been reported that head coach Pat Shurmur told Yates to go home and reflect on his decision.

Nothing official has been announced, however.

The Browns signed Yates in September of ’09 when he was released from the New England Patriots after a five year stent. Yates appeared in seven games for the Browns, but never recording three starts at guard.

Yates’ retirement could prove critical for the Browns in terms of depth along the offensive line. GM Tom Heckart and Co. resigned Yates as an UFA after the lockout was lifted last month.
