Marcus Benard to be Paid While on Reserve/Non-Football Injury List

Browns defensive end Marcus Benard will be paid while he’s on the “Reserve/Non-Football Injury” list, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.

Benard will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his hand during a motorcycle accident on Monday. Because the injury was not football-related, the club had the right to not pay the $370,588 that remained on Benard’s $525,000 base salary this season.

Signed by the Brownas as an undrafted free agent out of Jackson State in 2009, the 26-year-old posted 11 quarterback sacks his first two seasons in the league. The Browns moved Benard to defensive end as part of their transition to a 4-3 defense under Dick Jauron. After arriving to training camp overweight, Benard has been working himself back into shape and had three tackles in four games, with a share of a quarterback sack, in four games.

Benard will be a restricted free agent in 2012.
