The NFL Scouting Combine officially kicked off today in Indy, and the Browns were minus one, as GM Tom Heckert was back in Cleveland due to illness.
A team spokesman confirmed that Heckert’s illness is not believed to be serious and Heckert should be fine by next week.
Coach Pat Shurmur is at the event, and spoke today along with a number of other NFL coaches. He was the last one to speak before players were able to start talking to the media about 3:30pm EST.
“He’s fine. He just didn’t travel here,” Shurmur said of Heckert. “I don’t know all the details of what’s going on.”
Heckert also was not at the Senior Bowl this year.
The GM will Skype into Combine interviews and he’ll still participate in Pro Days and player visits to Berea.
The Browns other top personnel men, Jon Sandusky and John Spytek, are here evaluating college prospects as usual. Sandusky is the Browns director of player personnel and Spytek is the director of college scouting.
The Browns entire coaching staff, including Shurmur and offensive coordinator Brad Childress, is on hand for the week long event at Lucas Oil Stadium to look at potential draft picks.
