Browns Ink Free Agent Defensive End Juqua Parker; Release Jayme Mitchell

The Browns today signed defensive end Juqua Parker as an unrestricted free agent from Philadelphia. In addition, the team released defensive lineman Jayme Mitchell.

“Juqua is one of the toughest players I’ve ever been around,” said Browns general manager Tom Heckert. “He performs extremely hard on every play. With the additions of Juqua and Frostee (Rucker), we have added to the defensive mentality that we are looking for.”

“We are excited about the signing of Juqua,” said Browns head coach Pat Shurmur. “I was with him in Philadelphia and know him well. He is a tough, productive player who will be a great addition to our defense.”

“Dimitri came in last year and was an important part of our defense,” Shurmur said. “He helped solidify our defensive backfield and we are happy to have him back with the Browns.”

Originally signed by Tennessee as an undrafted free agent in 2001, Parker has appeared in 146 regular season games with 46 starts during his NFL career. He has registered 354 tackles, 36.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, 16 passes defensed and one interception.

Parker spent the first four seasons of his career with the Titans before signing with the Eagles in 2005. In 2011, he saw action in 12 contests, recording 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defense, while tying a career-high with two fumble recoveries, both of which he returned for touchdowns.

He was a member of a defensive unit that ranked in the top 10 in total (8th) and pass defense (10th). With his two fumble returns for touchdowns in 2011 (56 yards – 9/11 at STL & 47 yards – 12/18 vs. NYJ), Parker joined Jason Taylor as the only two defensive linemen in NFL history with three touchdown returns of 40 or more yards. Parker’s first touchdown came on a 55-yard interception return in 2008.

Parker played in 22 games at Oklahoma State University, where he earned third-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior after registering 57 tackles, 9.5 sacks and five passes defensed.

He began his collegiate career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College in Miami, Oklahoma, where he notched 29 sacks in two seasons. Born on May 17, 1978, the 6-2, 250-pound Parker is a native of Houston, Texas. He attended Aldine High School in Aldine, Texas, where he lettered in both football and basketball.

Yawn. Did we sign a top-100 free agent?

    Phil Dawson? Yes (Franchised)

    Dmitri Patterson? Yes

    Anyone else, though? No.

This is not much more important than signing our 5th-7th round draft picks.

Can’t say I am too awfully excited about FA moves, so far. Second round of FA? I won’t hold my breath. This team is being built through the draft — and considering that it was pretty much a ground-up endeavor, look for more pieces this year — but don’t look for a play-off team in this Division quite yet . .
