Browns and Richardson Close to Getting a Deal Done

The Browns are meeting today with the agent for No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson, and the deal is close, a source told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer today.

Richardson is in town ready to sign the deal and begin practicing.

The only outstanding issue is the offset language that the Browns would like in the contract. Such language would prevent them from having to pay the full guaranteed amount in the event Richardson signs with another team.

The No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin, do not have offset language in their contracts, meaning they’ll get their full fours of guaranteed money regardless if they remain with their original team or not. Richardson’s agent Jimmy Sexton also managed to keep offset language out of the deal for No. 7 overall pick Mark Barron.

This is done. Now get the QB signed. I watched the clips of the Fiesta Bowl. A lot to like — and a lot not to like. Get these guys in camp. We have 4 new starters on offense; three of them skill positions. At least one other “contributor” between Cooper and Benjamin. If this doesn’t kick-start this team, I don’t know what will.
