Brandon Weeden Talks About Being Named the Starter

(On being named the starter)- “I’m excited about it. I’ve busted my tail for 10 practices now, and I’ve really put in a lot of work, a lot of studying. I’ve had some up, had some downs, but I think I’ve come a long way. Hearing the news is obviously exciting, but my preparations aren’t going to change. I’m going to go about it the same way I’ve been going about it, and continue to get better as a player, continue to be a leader on this football team. We play Friday, that’s the matter of fact. My job is to get this team better to start winning games on Friday.”

(On how the chemistry has been with the first unit)- “It’s going real well. I know the plays well enough now, I can get in the huddle and joke with the guys. I’m not worried about what’s going on and thinking too much. I can get in the huddle and joke with the guys, really communicate and talk to the guys like Alex (Mack) and Joe (Thomas), and these guys that have been in there for a while. I think the chemistry is great. It’s getting better, and it’s going to continue to get better. I think I feel a lot more comfortable in the huddle now than I did even when we started this thing a couple weeks ago.”

(On if he needs more reps now that he’s the number one guy)- “No doubt, you look at guys like Peyton Manning, guys that have been in the league for 12, 13, 14, whatever, how many years, and he takes every rep. As a quarterback, you can’t see enough looks, you can’t make enough throws, you can’t get enough reps to get prepared. I think as a quarterback, you want as many as you can because there are so many different looks they’re giving you. You can do so many things offensively that are just completely different. I’m still young in this offense. I’m still learning the ins and outs of everything. I think every rep is vital, and that’s the way I approach it. I don’t take any rep for granted, even if it’s one-on-ones or if it’s an inside drill with the backs. I take every single rep and learn something from it.”

(On if there was any doubt that he would be the starter)- “You just never know. On draft night I knew who they were, but I didn’t know the guys personally when I can into this locker room. You never know how they’re going to bring me on, or how everything is going to work out. I took the mindset, and I told you guys right when I first got here that I’m going to come here and battle and do everything I can from my perspective to be the starting quarterback. However it pans out it pans out. I didn’t take the approach that it was going to be my job from day one. I think this league is too tough. It’s all based on wins and losses. Everybody wants to win, so they’re going to throw their best guys out there. I wanted to show that I was the best guy out there to give this team a chance to win. Like I said, I’ve busted my tail. I spent a lot of late hours and long nights studying that playbook and getting ready to come to practice the next day. Fortunately it paid off, but like I said the work doesn’t stop there.”
