Joe Banner Visits Chip Kelly in Arizona

Chip Kelly

According to several reports, Browns CEO Joe Banner traveled to Arizona today, intent on interviewing the Oregon Ducks head coach. Kelly, who is preparing his team to play the Kansas State Wildcats on January 3, will met with Banner on Friday as Cleveland will get the first shot at interviewing the hottest coaching name this off-season.

Cleveland will be in for a battle for the offensive guru, who turned down the Tampa Bay opening last season, as he is at the top of many organizations wish lists. Kelly, who believes his up-team spread system can work in the NFL, has only seen his interest from NFL team skyrocket in the past year.

Earlier this week owner Jimmy Haslem made it clear that bringing in an elite head coach was his top priority. TJ Ward, a former player of Kelly’s at Oregon, believes Chip is that elite coach. “I think the players in the NFL would respect him and they will respect how he approaches you,” Ward said. “He lets you do your job. In college, he treated us like pros. I think that’s what players respect and appreciate about him.

With speculaiton surrounding Josh McDaniel and Nick Saban as Doug Marrone and Chip Kelly are set to interview with the Browns, the coaching sweepstakes are officially underway in Cleveland.
