Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer is reporting that Broncos OC Adam Gase is clearly the number one target of the Browns as far as a new head coach is concerned.
The problem is, they may have to wait for nearly three weeks to talk to Gase, as he’s said he won’t interview with anyone until after the Broncos are out of the postseason.
The Broncos plays the Pats in the AFC Title Game Sunday afternoon, and with a win would move on to Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey on February 2nd.
Cabot says Gase is going to have to be strongly wooed to leave the comfortable settings in Denver with Peyton Manning and coach John Fox.
Although the Browns are now virtually assured an interview with Gase, 35, they better have a backup plan. Sources have told cleveland.com that Gase loves his job in Denver, and might be better served by sticking it out one more year in Denver with Peyton Manning, who threw for a career-high 55 TD passes and 5,477 yards this season.
The Browns undoubtedly became enamored with Gase because of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam’s close friendship with Manning, dating back to Manning’s days at the University of Tennessee.
The team lost out on Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt, who agreed to coach and Titans on Monday evening, and the Browns spoke Monday to former Titans coach Mike Munchak, who could be a backup plan if Gase decides to stay in Denver.
