Schefter Says Pettine To Get Coaching Offer From Browns

Mike Pettine

Another hour, another rumor about the Browns’ seemingly endless head coaching search.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Browns are expected to offer the job to Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine on Thursday.

According to Schefter, the two sides just need to work out contract details when they meet for the third time Thursday. Unspoken in Schefter’s report is that Pettine is obviously not the Browns’ first choice, as they have been rejected by both Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

It was only a year ago that the same braintrust seemed to “settle” for former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. We all know how well that deal worked.

Nevertheless, Pettine seems to be a solid hire. A defensive mastermind that worked under Rex Ryan for a decade, Pettine should immediately turn a talented Browns defense into a serious force to be reckoned with. In his first year as the Bills DC, he led the team to a top-10 defensive ranking.

The 47-year-old has no head coaching experience beyond the high school level.
