Brock Osweiler Named as Browns Starting QB for Preseason Opener

Browns coach Hue Jackson announced Monday that Brock Osweiler will start the preseason opener Thursday night against the Saints, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Cody Kessler will be the second man up, followed by DeShone Kizer and Kevin Hogan.

It doesn’t mean, however, that Osweiler will start the season opener against the Steelers Sept. 10. Kizer is still in the mix for that.

“At this stage in the evaluation process of our quarterbacks, we are going to have Brock start the preseason opener against the Saints on Thursday night,” head coach Hue Jackson said in a release. “A lot goes into our evaluation but it’s always going to be about efficiently and effectively running the offense. You want your starter to be able to do that despite any circumstance.

“Brock hasn’t really gotten any first team reps and this will give him that chance. We look forward to seeing what he can do with this opportunity throughout the week and against the Saints.”

The announcement comes a few days after the Dolphins expressed interest in trading for Osweiler, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Browns, Schefter said on The Dan Patrick Show, did not want to part with the veteran. The Dolphins ultimately coaxed Jay Cutler out of retirement.
