Report: Haslam Wasn’t Ready to Fire Jackson, Dorsey Gave Him a Good Reason To Pull the Trigger

Now that the gauntlet has been dropped on coach Hue Jackson and his tenure with the Browns, the question everyone wants to know has to do with the details as to when the decision was made, and why make it at this point.

Charles Robinson, Senior NFL reporter for Yahoo, released a couple of tweets after the announcement detailing as to the firing and what went down.

Here’s the two tweets, stating that at first, owner Jimmy Haslam wanted to stay the course, but was talked out of it by GM John Dorsey after hearing about the issues between Jackson and first-year offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Owner Jimmy Haslam was conflicted over blowing up another coach mid-season. Late last night he was leaning toward staying course. But Haslam spoke to GM John Dorsey, who said the Hue/Haley dynamic couldn’t continue. Some decision had to be made for the team.

Another concern for many Browns fans was that of the development of first-round quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has struggled during the teams’ recent three game losing streak in losses to the Chargers, Buccaneers and Steelers.

Sunday against the Steelers Mayfield had his worst day as a pro to this point, hitting on 22-of-36 passes for 180 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and a QB rating of 80.8

Mayfield has eight touchdowns and six interceptions in going 1-4 as a starter, with the win coming over the Ravens 12-9 in overtime back on October 7th.

Robinson tweeted that yes, there was concern about Mayfield, and that the front office did not want him to be involved in the issues between Jackson and Haley.

Significant worry in org from front office was Baker Mayfield getting thrust into the middle of Hue vs. Haley. GM John Dorsey didn’t want Mayfield being pressed for an endorsement of one of the guys or being constantly asked by the media about it the rest of 2018
