There was question regarding the status of Browns defensive end Chris Smith, who tragically lost his girlfriend last week in an accident.
Smith is a backup for the Browns, and most betting on sports online did not take into him playing or not into consideration, but there is a thought him taking the field will inspire the entire Browns team.
Petara Cordero was killed early on September 11th on I-90 after Smith and her pulled over their 2019 Lamborghini after a tire issue.
She was killed after being struck by a Mazda, by a woman who admitted to police that she had been drinking, but as of yet has not been charged.
It was up in the air if Smith was going to play against the Jets on Monday night football this evening, and today via Nate Urlich on twitter Smith announced in a statement he will take the field.
“I am going to play tonight because it is something, she would want me to do. She would want me to keep doing what I love and stay strong. I play for her tonight. She is my why.”
The accident which killed Cordero last week came just four weeks after she gave birth to the couple’s first child, Haven Harris Smith.
“Words cannot describe the sorrow we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara,” Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement last week.
“Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything possible to offer them our support, comfort and any resources in this most difficult time.”
Smith took a few days off from the team after the accident, but was back with the Browns and returned to practice on Saturday.
He made the trip with the team on Sunday to New Jersey for tonight’s game, but it was still unknown if he would suit up or decide to not play. The Browns were in his corner either way.
Another statement was put out through Smith’s publicist via Cleveland.com with support by the Cordero family.
“Would like to thank everyone for their thoughtful prayers, condolences and well wishes. From the bottom of their hearts they are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support.
At this time, they ask for complete privacy as both families take the time needed to grieve the sudden and unexpected loss of their beloved Petara Cordero.”
