After giving-up over 500 yards of total offense to the Atlanta Falcons in week one, the Saints Defense figured to have a nice rebound game lined-up in week two against Bryan Hoyer and the no-name Browns offense.
However, Hoyer found former Dallas Cowboy Miles Austin in the end-zone for a 3-yard score and a 7-0 Browns lead. New Orleans thought they dodged a bullet when Billy Cundiff missed a 44-yard field goal, but an offsides penalty gave Hoyer & Co. new life. The drive stalled 11-yards later, and Cundiff made good on his second chance from 33-yards out to give Cleveland the 10-0 lead.
Tashaun Gibson picked-off a Drew Brees pass intended for TE Jimmy Graham and promptly returned it 62 yards to extend the Browns lead to 16-3. The Browns appeared to have all the momentum leading into halftime.
But Drew Brees and the high-powered Saints offense calmly responded on the very next possession with a 12-play 80-yard drive, finding Graham from 9-yards out for the Saints first touchdown of the game, thus reducing the Browns’ lead to 6 right before the half.
Hower is 9/19 with 67-yards and the TD to Austin. Rookie Terrance West, starting in place of the injury prone Ben Tate, leads the Browns with 38-yards rushing and 22-yards receiving. Austin has the one reception for a TD, while Andrew Hawkins leads the receiving core with 7 targets.
For the Saints, Drew Breese passed John Elway for fourth place on the NFL’s all-time passing list and now has 51, 523 yards as of halftime. Graham has pitched in 5 receptions – all in the 2nd quarter – for 57 yards and the lone Saints TD to lead all receivers. Meanwhile, Mark Ingram has paced the Saints with 44-yards rushing on just 3 carries.
Stay tuned, as the Browns look to hang-on against the Saints. The second half is quickly approaching.
Go Browns!
